Montpelier is the capital of Vermont. As such, it is home to the Vermont State House, seat of the legislative branch of Vermont government, which remains one of the largest employers in the state. The Vermont History Museum and Vermont College of Fine Arts are also located in Montpelier.
State government activities have led to a large service and retail industry, as evidenced by large employers Central Vermont Medical Center, National Life Insurance Co., Sugarbush Ski Resort, Rock of Ages Quarries, Cabot Cooperative Creamery, Washington County Mental Health, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, and the New England Culinary Institute.
Tourism is also a major contributor to Montpelier’s economy. The Sugarbush and Mad River Glen ski areas are known throughout the northeast. Montpelier has manufacturers known worldwide for the production of granite memorials, manufacturers of machinery and instruments for the semiconductor industry, and an expanding food-processing industry, including the headquarters of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. Also located in Montpelier, are the annual Green Mountain Film Festival and the headquarters of several insurance companies. The majority of businesses in the downtown area, mostly retail, are locally owned, retaining the feel of a traditional American town.
